The Boys Varsity Soccer team made school history last night by defeating a local rival to post their first playoff win since the program’s inception. The game was played under the bright lights of the football stadium and in frigid conditions that tested the stamina and determination of both teams. The Cardinals took the lead very early on in the game after a beautiful set piece delivery from Tyler Lumbert found Kanyon McCort free at the back post for a headed goal. The Cardinals dominated the first half but could not capitalize on their early success and went into the half-time with a slender lead. Both teams came out fighting in the second half as the match was hotly contested at every phase of play. The Trojans equalized from a long throw in with 15 minutes to go as Sam Ray rose highest in the box to power a header into the Sandy Valley goal. However, with 7 minutes left in the game, great hold-up play by Bryce Stenger gave Jamon McCort the chance to slash through the Trojan defense and drive the ball low into the side netting. The Cardinals saw out a hectic last 5 minutes of the game and jubilantly celebrated as time expired and the win was sealed. Next up is an away fixture against Hiland Berlin @Dover in the next round of the playoffs. Kick-off is at 6pm. COME OUT AND SUPPORT YOUR CARDINALS!!!
