The Cardinals season opener was a tight affair that saw a lot of nervous play from both teams and not a lot of quality in the final third. The result was that the teams were tied up at the halftime whistle. The Lions took the lead in the second-half by taking advantage of a defensive error by the Sandy Valley back line. However, the Cardinals Kanyon McCort tied the score at 1-1 with a brilliant individual effort. The game was a closely contested affair until a fast break opportunity presented itself to the Lions who quickly converted the opportunity. Minerva held onto the lead and saw out the game to record their first win of the season. Next up for the Cardinals is an away game against the McKinley Bulldogs.
